Stones and finishes on this page: silver.

Six sizes of the same pair is a strange-looking catalogue entry until you hold a ruler to a lobe. Three millimetres reads as a full stop. Four is the size most people mean by "small silver studs". Six is the one that is visible across a room without announcing itself. Eight and ten are deliberate. The post is ten millimetres long on all of them, which is enough for an ordinary lobe and short enough that it does not disappear into a thick one, and every size has the same butterfly back.

A plain ball is also the pair that survives the most. There is no stone to fall out of a setting, no prong to catch on a jumper, nothing to hang and pull at the front of the piercing. It is the pair people buy for a first hole after the piercing has healed, for a second hole higher on the ear where a smaller ball is better, and for a work drawer where one pair has to go with everything. What goes wrong, when something does, is the back, and backs are the cheapest thing in this catalogue to replace.

Questions about EVERU Ball Stud Earrings

One shape, six sizes

What size EVERU ball studs should you buy for a first pair?

Four or five millimetres. It is large enough to be seen and small enough that it will not be the first thing anyone notices, and it suits a lobe of any size. Three millimetres is better for a child or for a second piercing higher on the ear.

How long is the post you are pushing through the lobe on an EVERU ball stud?

Ten millimetres, which is a standard adult length. On a thin lobe that leaves a little post showing behind the ear, which is normal. On a thick lobe it seats without the ball pressing into the front.

Are the EVERU ball studs you are buying solid silver all the way through?

They are 925 sterling silver, which means the alloy is 92.5 per cent silver, the same claim the 925 stamp makes. The larger sizes are lighter than they look, because a hollow ball on a solid post is what keeps a ten-millimetre stud from dragging on a lobe.
