01What is in the metal
The pairs whose product data states an alloy made without nickel, lead or cadmium, sterling posts, sterling backs, and a page that says what that does and does not mean.
Stones and finishes on this page: silver, black, white, blue, sky blue.
Nickel is the metal most people react to. The American Academy of Dermatology puts it above eighteen per cent of people in North America, names earrings and earring backs among the biggest culprits, and tells people to wear jewellery that is nickel-free or hypoallergenic, or made from surgical-grade stainless steel, high-karat yellow gold, pure sterling silver or platinum. The pairs on this page are sterling through the post and the back, and our product data states that the alloy carries no nickel, lead or cadmium.
Here is what that claim cannot do. It cannot tell you that your ears will be fine, because a person can react to a metal that is not nickel and because an irritation can come from a piercing rather than from an alloy. It cannot replace the patch test a dermatologist does, and the Academy is explicit that a diagnosis is their job. If your ears have reacted before, the sensible order is a cheap plain pair worn for a day, then a longer wear, then the piece you actually wanted, and a doctor rather than a catalogue if anything gets worse.

02About these pieces
What is in the metal
That the product data for the piece states an alloy made without nickel, lead or cadmium. It is a statement about metal content and nothing more. The word has no legal definition in jewellery, which is exactly why this page prints what the metal is instead of leaning on the word.
A new piercing should keep the jewellery the piercer put in until it has healed, and that advice comes from piercers rather than from us. Once it has healed, a plain sterling ball is about as simple as an earring gets: no setting, no hook, nothing hanging.
Take them out, and see a board-certified dermatologist rather than buying a different pair on a guess. A reaction to a metal is diagnosed with a patch test, and knowing which metal it is saves years of trial and error.
