A chain is bought on length and worn on where it lands. Seventeen and a half inches sits at the hollow of the throat on most adults and just below it on a longer neck. The two extra inches on the extender drop it to the collarbone, which is where a pendant shows over a crew neck rather than disappearing behind it. The cross pendant weighs 3.2 grams, and that number matters more than it sounds: light enough that the chain does not saw at the back of the neck, heavy enough that the pendant hangs straight instead of flipping face-in every time you move. The white finish on it is a plated surface layer over silver, which is bright, and which will eventually wear at the edges the way every plated surface does. The stone in each one is a cut zirconia in the colour of the month, not a mined gem, and the page for every month says so.
