Gold filled is a layer of gold bonded mechanically to a base metal, thick enough to work like solid gold and to survive years of wear, and it is not plating. We call it gold filled on the card because those are two different objects and the difference shows up in year three rather than in the photograph.

A huggie closes on the lobe instead of swinging below it, so it stays where it was put, does not catch on a scarf and is the one pair here somebody could sleep in without noticing. The hinge is the part to be gentle with: it is a small mechanism, it opens and shuts every time the pair goes on, and forcing it out of shape is the way these end up in a drawer. A hole that has fully healed takes them easily. A new piercing does not.
